From the Ashes
Mike Malm | 2022
On loan to CAPSA from the David and Lynette Jenkins Art Collection.
CAPSA is grateful for Dave and Lynette Jenkins and their commitment to this work and focus on honoring CAPSA’s staff, volunteers and supporters. Dave and Lynette commissioned Mike Malm to create this painting as a centerpiece to the new building addition and to reflect CAPSA’s work, honor the advocates who tirelessly strive to change lives, and provide hope to all survivors who enter CAPSA.
Thank you Dave and Lynette Jenkins, for your passion and support for this work.
The painting captures a woman with a child in despair, transitioning to becoming triumphant over her past and the support she received along her path.
The heroic figures in From the Ashes represent CAPSA’s staff, advocates and volunteers who tirelessly strive to change lives as they advocate, inform and empower survivors.
To advocate requires being present during a victim’s darkest hours while shining a light – ensuring they know they are not alone and creating hope for a future without abuse.
To inform is to educate, mentor and instill. To inform is to show there is a way forward and help them see their first and next steps on their path.
To empower is to stand behind the survivor as they rise from the ashes and build faith in themselves and their future.
The final heroic figure is the supporter who charitably sustains this work to ensure CAPSA can provide life-changing and life-saving support out of the ashes and into the light.
The representation of the growth of a survivor. Emerging from the ashes, when nurtured, they begin to bloom and take shape, and finally, when fully bloomed, they realize their full potential and offer their beauty to the world, lifting and inspiring hope in others.
The representation of a future of hope. The compositional lines move through the piece, uniting the figures and spiraling upward, emphasizing triumph, ascending above the darkness, and pointing towards the light.
The representation of the generosity and goodness in others. Providing the basket with an abundance of food: bread, fruits and vegetables given to lift others and support CAPSA’s work.
Water representing the belief, support and care give to support survivors. Water nurtures and nourishes flowers and plants helping them grow and fully bloom.
Represent potential to full actualization as the apple blossoms on the upper left and new growth, where the apple branches on the right side are bringing forth fruit.
From the Ashes was designed for CAPSA’s central stairway with an unfolding story as you approach and travel up the stairs.
As you approach the stairway, you see an advocate inspiring faith and shining a light for the survivor, giving them hope.
As you walk up the stairs, you see an advocate supporting a survivor as they stretch to reach their goals.
Once you reach the landing, you see the often hidden charity of the many who support each survivor on their path.
The painting has one more part of the story…
When you leave CAPSA, you see the full painting and story. Many survivors express, after their first visit to CAPSA, that they can see a path forward, have faith in themselves, and hope in their future.
A core theme of this piece is the altruistic support of individuals and families along their path and the charitable support to CAPSA.
When you donate to CAPSA, you are supporting the more than 1,900 women, men and children receiving direct services including shelter, court advocacy, housing and clinical therapy and backing CAPSA’s prevention program, which works to reduce violence through education to more than 18,000 participants each year. When you support CAPSA, you are supporting life-changing and life-saving services.
We need your financial support – please donate today.
